you can lead a horse to water…

…and take it swimming.

I took my horse Caffrey swimming today.  I know that is slightly off topic for this blog, but when everyone at work heard my response to the usual “what are you doing this weekend”, they demanded a full report back, so I thought I’d share it here too.

I normally only take him away from home when he visits the vets, so when he came out of the horsebox at the Equine Spa and found himself faced with a swimming pool, he did look a tad confused.  Still, after time to collect himself after the journey and some gentle land based exercise to warm him up he was booted up for safety and led down the ramp to the pool.

Swimming can actually be really good for horses and most seem to enjoy it.  Caffrey certainly didn’t need any encouragement to start paddling away.  In fact, he didn’t seem very keen to come out when his laps were up.

Then it was off to the solarium to dry him off under the infra red lamps (yes, I know, he has better spa days than me) and tell him what a good boy he’d been.

Thanks to the lovely people at Higher Spen we both had a really positive experience and I’ll have to take him again soon.
