Books I think you should read
If you are at all Plannery, this is my personal list of must-reads which I thought I’d share:
The bible:
Truth, Lies, and Advertising by Jon Steel
Writes in a way that manages to convey masses of useful/interesting/important stuff about planning, research and agency/client relations and still be an entertaining read.
The sequel:
Perfect Pitch by Jon Steel
How to collate and present all those lovely Plannery insights and win the business.
The Old Skool:
Pollitt on Planning
APG collection of three papers by Stanley Pollitt, godfather of Planning at BMP.
Makes your head hurt, but worth it:
How to Plan Advertising, edited by Alan Cooper
Another APG publication, this time 12 chapters on how to actually do Planning, with lots of charts, graphs, screengrabs and long words. Very interesting, but not exactly a holiday read.
Fresh Thinking:
BlinkBlink, by Malcolm Gladwell
How to harness and trust your instincts.
What life in an agency is really like:
Ask Jeremy, by Jeremy Bullmore (has to be ordered from Campaign HQ)
Collection of his advice columns from Campaign magazine
e, by Matt Beaumont
Fiction, but worryingly close to the truth.
